The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is an instrumental piece our Community Engagement Core that serves as a sounding board for faculty, students, and staff as well as promotes CHPDP activities in the community. YAB members recently attended the Phoenix Collegiate Academy (PCA) Outreach Fair to promote their work and share their experiences with other youth. Through this event, YAB members were able to practice their leadership and public speaking skills while expanding their network.
The YAB held their February meeting at Phoenix Children's Hospital (PCH) where Dr. Janiel Pimentel, a Pediatric Endocrinology Fellow and Adjunct Faculty in the CHPDP, gave members a tour of the hospital. The tour included the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, triage area, and youth activity center where YAB members gained a greater appreciation of the medical needs of children and families in the community.
"Touring the Phoenix Children's Hospital was an eye opening experience. It showed me that the determination and hard work put in by everyone in the hospital is extraordinary," stated Jocelyn, a CHPDP YAB member. "It made me want to volunteer at PCH to help make the lives of the children there a bit brighter."
Members of the ASU Center for Health promotion and Disease Prevention Youth Advisory Board (CHPDP YAB) participated in a holiday community outreach project this past December. The project was designed to promote healthy living and emotional well-being in youth. The CHPDP YAB members and staff delivered a physical activity session and provided healthy snacks donated by KIND® snacks and Hubert's Lemonade® as well as gifts to nearly 150 children and teens living at a local shelter. Our CHPDP Youth Advisory Board (YAB) volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Urban Farm where they helped with clean up and maintenance of the garden that supplies fresh fruits and vegetables to families in need. This form of service provides the YAB with a better appreciation for the needs within the community.
The CHPDP is fortunte to be in an area (Phoenix) which offers many community events for the YAB members to spread the word about the importance of leading a healthy life. These members volunteer their time to inform community members about how to make good nutrition choices, why daily physical activity is important, and what the ASU CHPDP is doing in their research to help grow the science of health promotion and disease prevention to make a positive impact on vulnerable community members.
